Literary censorship is not a new concept, yet it manages to surprise librarians, students and parents alike when the same books are taken off the shelves time and time again. Here at Wilbur Wright College, the students know what to expect and eagerly look forward to the annual Banned Books event, hosted by The Great Books Student Society.
Professor Michael Peterson and the GBSS members presented in the theater on Sept. 28, and discussed a number of censored novels, such as "Fahrenheit 451" and "Of Mice and Men," that have been challenged, censored or banned on various occasions. Special guest speaker professor Tineka Scalzo, the school's head librarian, emphasizes that the rising ban on literature novels may become normalized and lead to the defunding of libraries. Scalzo mentioned Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s bill to place a ban on banning books, which passed June 12.
When books are challenged, the request is brought up by a parent who does not want their child to be exposed to sensitive topics, such as racism or vulgar language, according to Scalzo. These are but a few reasons literature is being censored, not only in Illinois, but across the country.

Ironically enough, the novels discussed at the event center around limitation of free speech and censorship, which mirrors what is currently happening in the nation.
"This event is meant to bring awareness to students and it's a highly anticipated topic where people always have something to discuss," Petersen stated.
GBSS has a number of events planned for Wright Students every month, join them on Nov. 7 for their Autumn Poetry Discussion Panel and Poetry Compisition Workshop from 11:00 am 1:00 pm in room S12. On Nov 13, gather around for the The Great Ideas Event, featuring professor Justin Lowrey, at the Events Theater from 11:00 am to 12:20 pm.
