CCC and City Stage Donation Drive for Bussed Texas Migrants

Updated: Nov 22, 2022

Since late September 2022, the governor of Texas has been sending buses of migrants to Chicago and other "sanctuary cities" in an effort to put them under stress as he deals with what he sees as a “Biden border disaster”.

A report from Vice News explains that the migrants endured "more than 40 hours on a bus in horrible conditions, frequent breakdowns, lack of food and water, and virtually none of the promised shelter and safety on the other end of the journey." This leaves both the migrants and the places now responsible for housing these migrants in a potentially vulnerable position.

Different organizations such as Erie Neighborhood House, Southwest Collective, and CommunityHealth are helping to house these migrants in Chicago, as is the city government and CCC. These organizations are asking for donations in order to give the migrants the resources required to meet their basic needs.

Wright College‘s Wellness Center has been working with the city to organize a donation drive for crucial supplies which will be given to Truman College, where some of the migrants are being housed.

Kayla Godinez, a coordinator for Wright College’s wellness center, helped start up the drive in early October. This followed efforts from City Colleges of Chicago and Truman College to assist and provide shelter for the migrants as far back as early September.

Wilbur Wright’s Wellness Center has ended their donation drive as of Oct. 14, however, the City of Chicago is still accepting donations, and various Aldermanic offices are open as donation drop-off locations. Although the 38th ward that Wright College is located in is not currently one of these locations, most other wards, including the neighboring 36th ward, are accepting donations.

If you want to donate to the drive, you can find the list of supplies here.
