Now halfway through the spring semester, the time to elect a new slate of candidates to run the Wilbur Wright College’s Student Government draws near.
In the upcoming election, the student body will have a chance to elect a new executive board that will represent their interest.
Sanchez is a freshman who graduated from Lane Tech College Prep last June.
In high school, she ran cross country and track and she was also involved in the Filipino club. She was also involved in NHS and the National Spanish Honor Society. Sanchez frequently volunteered as a peer mentor at school, and often helped out on campus in any way she could.
What made you join Student Government in your first year at Wright?
“I felt like I was solely coming to Wright for classes. I loved helping people and when I saw that SGA existed here at Wright, I knew it was something that would take me out of my comfort zone, and I wanted to do something that I had not done in high school.”
What insight and experience did you gain from your time as part of the Executive Board? And as Treasurer, what were some of the tasks you had to do?
“Time management was the biggest skill I had to learn. Student Government turned my 12-hour week into a 20–26-hour week. I got to learn how to advocate for myself and use my voice when normally I shy away from those situations. And as Treasurer, I was tasked with helping with governing the clubs and helping them with their fund requests for their events and other needs. It also required me to be present on campus in case someone has a question or needed help.”
Why did you decide to run for SGA president?
“I felt that I have learned a lot as treasurer in taking on a larger role as president which will not only allow me to use skills I learned as treasurer but also allow me to gain more and grow as a person. I feel like it’s a position that people shy away from because of its large responsibility, but I felt like I could take it on, and I would have a lot of support from the rest of the executive board and advisors that I have felt this year, that will then allow me to support the entire student body.”
What are some of your top priorities that you want to be addressed if elected for the next school year?
“One of the priorities I have, if elected, is helping extend the cafeteria hours because many people have expressed frustration with not being able to get food after their class. I feel that is one of the factors as to why many people come to Wright solely for classes. Another thing I’d love to help with is to specialize advising. I feel that we have a very strong engineering program and that they get a lot of support from advisors, and I’d love for other top majors such as business and healthcare to receive the same amount of support.”
“A lot of people who attend Wright are undecided and I feel that having stronger communities in these majors will only help people decide what they want to pursue and help them with transferring to university.”
Any last pitch or closing statement?
“I hope that my diverse background and experiences will help me connect with a lot of students and I hope to make an impact on as many people here as I possibly can.”
The SGA elections opened on March 8 and voting closes on March 31.
