Wright's 1st Annual Day of Service

In celebration of Earth Day this year, Wright held its first-ever Annual Day of Service on April 22nd. This event, wonderfully organized by Alicia Anzaldo, was a community clean up project in which people cleaned up litter at Bunker Hill and Caldwell Woods. With this being the first Day of Service, only faculty were invited to attend and just two students joined in, myself included.

On that cloudy Friday morning, we met on campus, loaded a bus, and by 8:30 am we headed to Bunker Hill. After instructions were given on how to clean up the litter, gloves and garbage bags were distributed and we dispersed around the forest preserve. It was encouraging to see the smiling faces of about 50 faculty members as we worked together towards a common goal that benefited our planet. Besides there being a brief rainfall, the weather was mild and well-suited for a morning of being outside. Shortly after 10 am, we gathered together for a light snack break and people compared what they had picked up. Plastic seemed to be the main form of litter in the forest preserve, but there were objects found laying around that ranged from a golf club to a birdfeeder to even a hubcap. By noon, we gathered back into the bus and headed to campus to enjoy lunch together.

This Day of Service was a fun time and a great way to engage in the community. With the hope that this event will be open to students next year, it will be exciting how much the turnout can be increased and what the future holds for future days of service.
