Wright Side 2022 Release Party Recap

Updated: Nov 29, 2022

Earlier this month, the Wright Side – Wright College’s student-run literary arts magazine – released their 2022 and 2021 editions of the paper. At this year's release party, the first in-person since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an audience of students, faculty, and family watched as the Wright Side staff finally unveiled and presented their work from the last two years.

The 2021 edition was led by Editor-in-Chief Emmanuel Ali while this year's 2022 edition was led by Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director Raine Yung, who have both since moved on from Wright, but left behind an impressive legacy. In leaving Wright, though still offering future help to the staff, Yung announced that 2022 contributor and Head Editor Lydia Schoessling will be taking over her roles for the coming school year. Continuing his help with the Wright Side is Faculty Advisor Vincent Bruckert, who has been in this role for the last 20 years of this publication's 32-year history.

As the magazine was released and its staff was introduced, its importance to its staffers and contributors was constantly mentioned by each of the presenters and performers.

One student, and the Head Graphic Designer for the publication, Billy T., shared their arduous journey with the audience. After dealing with constant setbacks and having to constantly deal with loss and hardship, and making sacrifices between their family and education, Billy found theirself back at Wright. There they credited Yung and the Wright Side staff with being their first social interaction at post-pandemic Wright College, showing, as Billy said in their purposefully improvised speech, that “Art moves us forward when people are lost.”

In that same vein, Yung, in her Letter from the Editor, shared her gratitude towards the staff that's made this magazine possible, saying “the contributors of this magazine have exposed delicate parts of themselves and gave us the honor to share that with the world.”

Incoming Editor-in-Chief Schoessling left no doubt that the magazine and all the people that make it possible would be well cared for. “I just want to say thank you to all of the submitters for their beautiful artwork, along with the team for coming together to create the magazine," she said. "It has been something I will never forget, and will cherish dearly. I’m definitely planning on having the gallery become a tradition at Wright, and I cannot wait to see what next year brings us!”

Following the unveiling and slideshow presentation of the last two years' magazines, various contributors to the magazine presented their works to the audience. Leading off was Editor Sarai R. Murray who shared some of her poems from both the 2021 and 2022 editions. Following her were Student Government Association Secretary Yehuda Goldbloom; poet, student, and local librarian Dan Weinberg; as well as Yung, Schoessling, and others whose work constantly impressed the audience.

The event concluded with a catered lunch and the opportunity to view many of the works in the Event Building Atrium. There the staff, artists, and supporters mingled and shared their love for each other's works while people were invited to sign up for this year's staff. Towards the end of the event, the staff handed out printed copies of the magazine, which can still be found periodically throughout the fall semester at Wright's campus.

The last two years' editions of The Wright Side can be found here: 2021 and 2022 and plans for the 2023 release will be announced in the future.
