The Veterans Club has placed white boxes around campus as donation bins for their annual Toys for Tots donation drive.
After the drive ends each year, they deliver the toys to the Marine Corps Reserve to be distributed. Toddlers, preteens, and those between will receive the donated toys.
Since 2015 – excluding when Wright's campus was closed for COVID-19 and the club couldn't hold the drive – The Veterans Club has collected around 15,000 toys so far for Toys for Tots.
After restarting the drive when campus reopened, this fall semester provided a chance to “revamp” the charity. “We want to make sure every kid gets a gift for Christmas,” said Shelice Cartagena, a Wright freshman and vice president of The Veterans Club. In this year’s drive, The Veterans Club has collected enough toys to fill one box.
The Veterans Club will also host a Krispy Kreme donut sale from Dec. 12 through 15 to fundraise money; a portion of the proceeds will go toward buying toys for the drive. The initially planned fundraiser in October was canceled due to doubts about sufficient sales in light of the potential CCCTU strike.
The drive is accepting new, unopened, and unwrapped toys. The club does not expect expensive toys, and suggests one can typically find toys on sale. Cartagena added that the club doesn't want participants to go past their financial means. She also added that there are other ways to contribute to those in need this Christmas as well if one is unable to donate to Toys for Tots.
